 The way you celebrate it did. In Denmark, we have the holiday Good Hanging With My Gnomies Shirt "Fastelavn" in February. It's pretty much the same thing (Kids dressing up, going door to door getting candy) with some added elements (Our version of the Piñata for one thing). So we have this almost identical holiday, but for different reasons (Fastelavn is a carnival, ie. "Farewell to the Meat" before Lent) and Halloween is a harvest celebration (pumpkins) and warding ceremony. Even the "original" Halloween was very different. The lanterns were turnips in Europe. Bonfires were a thing originally, as was yelling and singing. My point is that the Holiday, that shops are trying to ram down our throat, with the pumpkins and dressing up in spooky outfits and everything being orange, that's very much a US tradition. Don't get me wrong. I kinda like Halloween. We need a holiday right about now, in the gap between summer bonfires and Christmas. We don't really have a fall feast. But the insistence from "Big Candy" is a bit much, and we already have the February thing, meaning both get watered down.

He brought this on himself by not only staying with someone he so clearly lacks respect for but by likely making her feel ashamed to the point that she has to impulsively try to make grand gesture efforts to better herself for HIS sake rather than her own or at her own pace.
